There is only one native snake found in Mauritius, but it never purposefully comes onto land.
Yellow-bellied sea snake Pelamis platurus
This is the only venomous reptile of Mauritius, but is rarely encountered as it is completely pelagic, which means it spends its life in the open seas and never purposefully comes to shore. There is only one official record of this snake in Mauritius, which is of an individual pictured below that was found during a storm on the beach of Flat Island. It has an average length of approximately 90cm with black back and yellow belly. It is unlikely that anyone would find this reclusive snake, but if it is encountered it should not be disturbed.
